The Malta Football Players Association (MFPA) has called on clubs and the Malta Football Association (MFA) to ensure that essential medical facilities and services are in place at local stadia.
“Earlier this year, the MFPA reported multiple shocking incidents in local football,” the MFPA said in a statement.
“The statement spoke of incidents whereby players did not have at their disposal even the most basic medical assistance on site.
“Last Sunday (December 11), yet another unacceptable incident took place at Ħamrun’s Victor Tedesco Stadium, when (Marsa defender) Yessous Camilleri suffered a serious injury that could have seriously jeopardised his health and football career.
“Camilleri needed emergency medical attention, but instead had to wait.
“Once again, an ambulance was not at the stadium during the game.
“Once again, the health, fitness and well-being of a player were put at stake, because in Malta, clubs and MFA are still allowed to get away with not providing a safe working environment for players. “
The MFPA said they will maintain their vocal stance on this delicate and vital issue, “until these incidents are a thing of the past”.
The local footballers’ association called on the MFA Council and top officials to declare their position and take immediate remedial action on the matter.
“Should the MFPA’s statement, once again, fall on deaf ears, the association together with the players will take action and if necessary involve the competent authorities,” the MFPA warned.
“Safeguarding the players’ fitness and health is not only a player’s right but also essential to the good of the game.
“The provision of an ambulance and medical assistance at all venues were organised football is played is the bare minimum.”
