New libraries have been presented to St Thomas More College’ Marsaxlokk primary school as part of the Aqra Kemm Tiflaħ/Enriching Classroom Libraries programme. Each library includes 100 fiction and non-fiction high-appeal books – 50 in Maltese and 50 in English – designed to encourage children to read for pleasure. The programme, which is run by the Education Ministry’s National Literacy Agency and is supported by GO, aims to install similar new libraries in every primary classroom in State schools across Malta.

During the presentation Mr Bartolo, said: “As we continue making strides in connectivity, robotics and artificial intelligence, technological proficiency is becoming increasingly important and a sought-after skill for any successful career. With literacy still at the core of any educational system, it is imperative that children have a good relationship with books and reading.

“The aim of Aqra Kemm Tiflaħ/Enriching Classroom Libraries is specifically to nurture this relationship and to encourage children to pursue their interest in science, among other subjects, by providing them with a rich selection of beautiful, informative and interesting books to pique their curiosity.”

Daniela Bagnaschi, GO’s senior manager – marketing, said: “GO is investing €11,000 every year in Aqra Kemm Tiflaħ, part of a larger contribution towards education in Malta. GO invests in areas like literacy and science not only because we want children to learn, but because we want them to grow up to be creative and innovative, to have the skills they will need in a world driven by technology and connectivity.

“Developing a love of reading at a young age is key to ensuring young people continue to learn throughout their lives, and lifelong learning is the key to success.”
