Wirt San Ġwann is appealing to the public, interested NGOs and other constituted bodies whose duty it is to protect our national heritage to object with the Planning Authority without reservations and without delay against the demolition of the only Word War II pillbox that still survives in San Ġwann.

An application by a developer, PA 3873/16, was submitted to the Planning Authority recently to demolish the pillbox to make way for more apartment blocks.

Pillboxes around the island have considerable historical significance and this particular one dating back to the 1930s or 1940s is clad in masonry in line with the War Office policy and strategy of camouflaging the structure by way of blending it with the rural surroundings.

Are we to forgo this wartime defensive vestige in the name of ‘development’ or are we brave and strong enough to make our voices heard in unison to save what is left of our World War II heritage, this time in Triq Emvin Cremona, San Ġwann?
