The Malta Darts Association have just hosted the International Open tournament at the Topaz Hotel, Buġibba.

The competition saw a record number of participants who hailed from the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Italy, Sweden, Greece, Germany, the Netherlands and Malta.

The men’s tournament was contested by 168 players and there were 50 players for the women’s event.

Norbert Attard, who plays for Marsa St Michael, reached the men’s singles quarter-finals along with British players Kelly Corcoran, David Dodds, Greg Upton and Andy Keen, Germany’s Klaus Rohlederer, John Michael, of Greece, and Sweden’s Peter Sajwani.

Michael and Rohlederer eventually progressed to the final with the player from Greece taking the honours after winning the decisive match 3-1.

The women’s singles title went to UK player Casey Gallagher.

In the final, she had the better of Anette Tillbom, of Sweden, 4-1.

In doubles, Chris Cohen and Emmauel Borg were the local pair with the best showing after reaching the quarter-finals.

The final was contested by Chris Aubrey and Jack Tweddell, of the UK, and Dennis Nillson and Johan Engstrom, of Sweden. The UK pair won the title after a 4-0 win.

In women’s doubles, Carina Ekberg, of Sweden, and England’s Betty Rodgers beat England’s Maureen Purvis and Jean Stanley 4-0 in the title showdown.
