This year’s championship campaign, for the ninth consecutive year sponsored by Bank of Valletta, will open on Friday, June 10 with the clash between Sliema and Valletta.

The top flight will again comprise six teams which also includes champions San Ġiljan, Exiles, Neptunes and Sirens.

The Premier Division will once more be complemented by the First Division competition which will be made up of last season’s champions Marsascala, Marsa-xlokk, Otters and Ta’ Xbiex.

The first match in this division will be between Ta’ Xbiex and Marsascala and will precede the Sliema-Valletta clash.

The draws were made yesterday by ASA president Joe Caruana Curran and Anthony Scicluna, BOV chief officer.

The prelude to the summer league will as usual be the match for the President’s Cup to be played on Tuesday, June 7 bet-ween San Ġiljan and Neptunes.

Addressing the media and club delegates, Caruana Curran said that the waterpolo followers are keen to follow what should be interesting competitions despite the fact that from this year each club can make use of only one foreign player rather than two as was the case previously.

“The association is nevertheless confident that there will be quality fare on offer,” Caruana Curran contended.

“The clubs have followed the ASA’s policy of investing in coaches of a certain standing most of whom have taken up duties throughout the year.

“This has resulted in a better level of fitness and tactical preparation of the players, factors that should bring about an all-round improvement.”

At the beginning of his address the ASA president also referred to today’s BOV Winter League championship decider between Sliema and San Ġiljan, a duel which should whet the appetite of the teams’ fans and the game’s enthusiasts in general.

He also said that the fixtures will be subject to changes according to the clubs’ exigencies.

Scicluna said that the collaboration between the ASA and BOV renders satisfaction and the progress is evident as is borne by the results of the Maltese teams at international level.

“We are looking forward to another keen championship race which could also produce some surprises and, above all, a spectacle,” the BOV official said.
