Our Lady of Victory church conservator Amy Sciberras will be giving a talk entitled Marouflage Paintings in Malta.

The technique involving the attachment of a painted canvas to a wall or rigid support, known as marouflage, has been widely used in Maltese and Gozitan churches since the early 20th century.

Nonetheless, very little and sporadic information on this technique in the Maltese context exists to date.

Sciberras will explain how the manufacturing of marouflage in Malta is mainly an amalgamation of the knowledge and experience acquired by Maltese artists from foreign countries and of their experimentation to overcome both aesthetic and deterioration problems.

Sciberras graduated in conservation and restoration studies of paintings and has been working as a paintings conservator-restorer for the past four years. She is also managing the conservation project of Our Lady of Victory church in Valletta.

The talk will be delivered in English at Din l-Art Ħelwa, 133, Melita Street, Valletta, on Thursday at 6pm. Entrance is free but donations to Din l-Art Ħelwa will be appreciated.
