A new publication about Maltese war memories
'Tifkiriet tal-Gwerra – (War Memories)' also includes a chapter on the war in Gozo
Tifkiriet tal-Gwerra – (War Memories) is a Heritage Malta publication based on interviews and research by broadcaster Gordon Caruana. It includes oral memories of Maltese who were between the ages of five and 16 during the war. These recordings were made during the last 20 years.
The people interviewed from different villages narrate the experiences they went through between 1940 and 1943, where they suffered from hunger, death, uncertainty, illness and lacked many necessities.
They remember that they had to leave their houses, the loss of their homes, the airstrikes, the long hours in the shelters when they did not have the chance to attend school and play outdoors.
Tifkiriet tal-Gwerra – (Memories of the War) also includes a chapter on the war in Gozo and interesting notes on events that took place in Malta during that time, interspersed with photographs of the protagonists.
The oral memories narrated in this book help us to live what our forefathers went through and to keep remembering and recalling important dates that happened in Malta in that period including when the Italians surrendered on September 8, 1943, as well as the visits of various dignitaries that took place 80 years ago to boost the morale of the Maltese.
This book is available from all Heritage shops in Malta.
