Aġenzija Appoġġ will be assuming responsibility of a baby found abandoned in Buġibba on Friday, shortly after it was delivered, the government said.
The duty magistrate informed the chief executive of the Foundation for the Welfare of Social Services that the agency could start the procedures to put the baby under a care order.
The social workers assessed the baby, which is currently being cared for at Mater Dei hospital during this delicate moment, the government said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the police are still trying to identify the mother after the baby was found abandoned with its umbilical cord still attached on Pioneer Street in Buġibba at 4.15pm on Friday.
The manager of Child Protection Services Steve Libreri is assisting in the inquiry.
TVM reported that in a preliminary medical examination the baby was found to be in good health, weighing 3.5 kilos.
The baby boy has been named Cristiano by Magistrate Joe Mifsud, a well-known Juventus supporter, purportedly in honour of the Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo.
