The Addolorata Cemetery chapel has been closed since January 1 after the Franciscan Fathers decided they could no longer administer it.

Health Minister Joseph Cassar said in Parliament today that priests of the Franciscan Order had administered the chapel for many years. Their role included funeral Masses and other functions, as well as cleaning and maintaining the place.

The Order decided to terminate its service as of January 1 and the chapel was therefore been temporarily closed until decisions were taken on who would run it, and how.

Dr Cassar said efforts were being made to find a person or persons with the experience and dedication needed to take responsibility for the chapel.

He thanked the Franciscans for their service.
