The Malta Football Association has invited Simon Vella, the Scotland-based defender, to form part of the Malta national team that will play against Kazakhstan on February 12 at the National Stadium.

Vella, who holds dual citizenship, was given the news by the club after receiving the Malta FA's enquiry. February's friendly will be Vella's third appearance for Malta.

The Airdrie United defender had made his international debut for Malta during last year's Rothmans Tournament when he played against Jordan and Lithuania.

He was invited to form part of the Maltese contingent that played against the Balearic Islands selection on December 27. However, he was not released by the club as his team was playing an important league match in the same weekend.

"I'm delighted to have been given the chance to play for Malta again after such a long time. I have been waiting anxiously for another call-up for almost 12 months now. Hopefully, I can prove that I deserve to don the red shirt," Vella told The Times yesterday.

"My first call-up with the Malta team came at a time when I was not playing regular football at Stenhousemuir after falling out with the manager.

"However, I still believed that I had done quite well during the tournament, even though I felt that I could give much more to the team.

"Since then I have moved to Airdrie United where I command a regular place in the team. At the moment I'm recovering from an ankle injury which left me out action for the past two weeks.

"However, the injury is OK now and if everything goes to plan I should be fully fit for the friendly against Kazakhstan."

Celtic clash

Vella could make a return to his team on Saturday when the Second Division side travels to Brechin City for a league match. The coming days could also reserve another important fixture for Vella.

On Saturday, Airdrie were held to a 1-1 draw by First Division team St Johnstone in the third round of the Scottish Cup. Tomorrow week they will be involved in a replay. The winners will be rewarded with a trip to Park Head to face Glasgow giants Celtic.

"We are certainly looking forward to our Cup clash with St Johnstone. Last Saturday we were unlucky not to win as we were the better side but suffered a late equaliser. Celtic would be a massive game for me personally and for the club... hopefully we can make it happen by winning the replay," Vella said.
