Alexandra Borg Olivier, wife of former Prime Minister and leader of the Nationalist Party Ġorġ Borg Olivier, passed away at her residence in Sliema yesterday morning, aged 86.

Called Alex for short, Mrs Borg Olivier, née Matte, married the late former Prime Minister in 1943. They had two sons, Alexander and Peter, and a daughter Angela, who passed away this time last year. Dr Borg Olivier died in 1980.

Mrs Borg Olivier's funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at Stella Maris parish church, Sliema. The PN sent condolences to the family, saying Mrs Borg Olivier, as the wife of the former Nationalist Prime Minister, lived through the historical moments the country experienced, in particular, its granting of independence in 1964.

"Like every mother and wife of a politician, she lived the beautiful and bad moments that politics brings with it," the PN said.

Messages of condolences were posted on timesofmalta.com with commentators pointing out the irony of the fact that, only the day before, they had watched a biography of Dr Borg Olivier on television.
