Appreciation - David Cluett

David Cluett will remain in the hearts of each and every Floriana supporter.

Growing up through the ranks of teams on the field of play, he once caught my eye in a game I played for Athleta Juvenis against Young Boys. As I prepared to take a penalty, I could not really get the sight of goal comfortably with his imposing frame.

Many a time, touches of trepidation, anguish or joy engulf players during matches. It is ironic how we look at these moments as those of truth as I dwell how seemingly insignificant they are compared to the loss of someone like David.

He served Floriana well and for me to have been part of the committee during his heyday is of personal significance. He was outspoken yet sensitive and always striving to attain greater heights.

It all comes back as the team prepared before a match. In the dressing room, he would look tense but his towering figure - fearless and inspiring - oozed confidence on his fellow players.

I always used to whisper a few words to him which were always 'David with you in goal we are unbeatable'.

I still have the march of his studs in my ears as he makes it to the dressing room after each game, alone, as keepers are usually last in.

David is now in his final resting place but he will remain a home for our hearts and memories. A treasure of a keeper - we have him for keeps.
