Fr Geoffrey Attard, writes:

On August 31, at about 9 p.m., the death of 27-year old Fr Joshua Muscat, of Nadur, Gozo, was announced.

Fr Muscat was born on February 7, 1982. He received his primary and secondary education in Gozo and began his studies for priesthood at the Sacred Heart major seminary in Gozo in September 2000 together with five other students.

Fr Muscat was ordained priest by Bishop Mario Grech with Fr Michael Curmi of Xagħra in June 2007 at the Gozo Cathedral. After his ordination, he left for the archdiocese of Turin, Italy, where he worked as a curate at the parish of the Holy Trinity of Nichelino, where Fr Joe Galea, of Fontana, was parish priest until his premature death some months before. Fr Galea had served as a priest in Italy since his ordination in 1977 and was awarded an Italian knighthood for his contribution to Italian sports.

While in Italy, Fr Muscat organised a trip for his Italian parishioners from Nichelino to Gozo, which helped strengthen the bond between the two.

Fr Muscat's funeral Mass was presided over by Mgr Mario Grech at the parish basilica of St Peter and St Paul, Nadur, last Wednesday. A large representation of the presbyterium of the diocese of Gozo concelebrated.

Fr Muscat will be remembered by all who knew him as a gentle and kind-hearted priest, always ready to help and eager to minister to those in need.

After he was diagnosed with his illness, he bore the Cross of his suffering with temperance and fortitude and continued to practise his priestly ministry until a point when it was no longer possible to do so.
