I had not seen my old friend George for some 50 years and I did not know that he had come back to Malta but I was very sorry to read about his passing away.

I first knew George during the war years at the Bishop's Seminary in Gozo. He was a few classes above me and I particularly remember him as the organiser and script writer of the plays that were given at the Seminary during carnival. He was aided, if I remember right, by his friends Henry Fenech and Julian Refalo (Rapa) but he was the moving spirit. To my untutored mind these plays were West End stuff. We really looked forward to them.

I again met George some 10 years later when I was studying in London and he was conducting his epic programme Din hija Londra (London calling) on the BBC. George was in continuous touch with Malta House (then in Panton Street) and he was a rallying point for all Maltese in London. He very kindly invited me to a couple of his programmes so that my family could hear my voice, as he put it. Telephone calls were beyond a student's budget. He even asked me to review an exhibition of architectural photography which was being mounted in London so that he could give me more air time.

We lost touch after that but my lasting impression of George is that of a kind, lively and delightful personality.
