Restoration works at the Teatru Astra in Victoria have been completed after it was damaged by fire almost three years ago. Both the stage and the auditorium were extensively damaged and needed structural and decorative work. Instead of repairing the damage, however, the whole theatre was renovated. It has also been equipped with a cinema screen.
Vodafone Malta Foundation contributed towards the restoration by helping to fund the theatrical curtain. The theatre offers opportunities of exposure to talented youths. It had offered internationally acclaimed tenor Joseph Calleja his first leading role in the opera Macbeth in 1997.
