Vittoriosa has made it into the records book, with officials from the Guiness Book of Records having confirmed that the dockyard town set a new record on Saturday night for illuminations by candlelight.

Last Saturday's event was the highlight of the three-day Birgufest. It went ahead despite downpours for most of the day which had put the event in doubt.

Officials from the Guiness Book of Records confirmed that there were 'significantly more' candles than the 10,000 needed to establish the record.

The residents illuminated the narrow winding streets, their homes, squares and bastions using thousands of candles, as well as fjakkoli, giving a magical appearance to the centuries old city.

The festival also included historic re-enactments, exhibitions and shows.
