Teachers and learners of English have now got a new tool to help master the sounds of the English language thanks to the British Council s latest iPad pronunciation app.

Sounds Right is an interactive learn english pronunciation ( http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/mobile-learning/sounds-right ) chart with sounds grouped by vowels, consonants and diphthongs complete with examples of each in use. It is available to download from the iTunes store (http://itunes.com/ apps/ britishcouncil) for free.

Sounds Right was originally created for interactive whiteboards and has recently been released for use on hand-held learning devices.

Mark Hamilton, research and development consultant at the British Council, said: “About six years ago I developed an interactive Learn English pronunciation chart to enable teachers in class to model the sounds of the English language and help learners with their pronunciation. During this time the application has been used in British Council teaching centres in over 100 countries but we were unable to give it to learners to help with practising pronunciation outside of the classroom.

“However, the great news now is that the iPad and other hand-held learning devices are enabling us to make our Learn English materials accessible to everyone. Sounds Right, which was profiled in the iTunes stores new and noteworthy section, is the latest in a number of free Learn English apps the British Council has developed for handheld learning devices.”

More than 1.5 million learners and teachers from over 100 different countries visit the British Council’s English resources websites every month.

Each site has interactive features such as user comments, discussion forums, content ratings and polls and media-rich materials including podcasts, flash games and video.

The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations.
