Parents who send their children to independent schools will be able to claim an additional €300 in tax rebates per child, the Finance Minister announced during his yearly Budget speech.

Independent schools had increased their fees by up to 20 per cent ahead of the current scholastic year, arguing that they were forced to do so to make up for salary increases due to teachers as part of a new collective agreement.

Finance Minister Edward Scicluna said in the Budget speech that the increase will be of €300 per child, so that the rebate will next year stand at €1,600 for each kindergarten child, €1,900 for those in primary school and €2,600 for those in secondary education.
