The Malta Air Rifle and Air Pistol Club’s 2010/11 season took off last weekend at Bidnija.

William Vella underlined his dominance in air rifle as he topped the event with a score of 573+97.8.

Lawrence Darmanin was second with 562+98.1 and Austin Vella third with 457+64.8.

In men’s air pistol, Ray Cacciattolo, fresh from his bronze medal success at the Welsh Airgun Championships in Cardiff, claimed the honours with 549+95.7.

Martin Grech took the runner-up spot and newcomer Emmanuel Grech achieved a respectable third.

The women’s air pistol competition was won by Eleanor Bezzina ahead of Josette Calleja.

Bezzina also took part in the Welsh championships recently.

She had good reason to be satisfied with her performances after winning silver and bronze in air pistol when competing against shooters from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Norway.

It is now hoped that with the backing of the authorities concerned, target shooters will maintain their improvement in the build-up to next year’s GSSE in Liechtenstein.
