Malta's no.1 female player Lisa Camenzuli yesterday required little time to book her place in the GSSE women's singles semi-finals after mauling Martina Agarici 6-1 6-0 at the Marsa Sports Club.

However, there was no similar luck for young Rosanne Dimech who was beaten by Mandy Minella in the quarter-finals. The Luxembourg girl won the match 6-2 6-2.

Camenzuli was in a class of her own as she started her quest to, at least, equal her achievement in San Marino two years ago when she won a bronze medal in the same event.

Agarici was never in the game. Camenzuli's effective play was too much for the San Marino player who was even denied of a consolation game in the second set when the local player, serving for the match at 5-0, cancelled three break points before winning the deuce and reaching the last four.

Today, Camenzuli plays against Claudine Schaul of Luxembourg on Court One. The latter yesterday eliminated Johanna Armita, of Monaco, 6-0 6-1. Minella takes on Nathalie Welker, also of Monaco, in the other semi-final.

Camenzuli will also figure in the doubles semi-finals this afternoon along with Carol Cassar Torreggiani. They play against San Marino's M. Agarici and F. Guardigli.

Today's singles semi-finals: Camenzuli vs Schaul (Luxembourg); Minella (Luxembourg) vs Welker (Monaco).

Malta's men's doubles team eliminated

Malta's GSSE participation in the men's tennis competitions came to a disappointing end yesterday when Gordon Asciak and Mark Schembri were ousted from the quarter-finals of the doubles event.

The previous day Schembri suffered the same fate, but in the singles, when he lost his match to Emmanuel Huessner of Monaco.

Malta's other singles player in the men's event, Marcus Delicata, was also beaten in the opening round by Liechtenstein's Herbert Weirather.

Asciak and Schembri were close to clinching the opening set yesterday against Andorra's J. Vila/J. Jimenez-Guerra but lost it in a tie-break 7-6. Both sides held serve in the second set until Andorra obtained the break they needed to wrap up the match 2-0. They won the second set 6-4.
