Mgr Charles Vella, the founder of the Cana Movement, passed away on Saturday, aged 89.
He died at Mater Dei Hospital.

In a tweet, Archbishop Charles Scicluna paid tribute to the late priest who he described as an apostle of ministry to many families.

Dun Charles, as he was known, was very outspoken on social issues in the 1950s and 1960s.
He later moved to Milan where he was very active within the San Raffaele hospital foundation. Despite his old age, he was well known for his encyclopedic memory.
