The festive season is approaching and carolling comes out spontaneously in these days. Everyone sings: the children at schools, people in churches or during parties and choirs... choirs sing to celebrate! To celebrate and commemorate the best story ever told; the birth of a saviour.

‘Carolling Christmas’ is a Christmastide concert presented by San Lawrenz Parish Church and Schola Cantorum Jubilate. The concert will feature the mentioned Schola Cantorum Jubilate and the BrassTubes. It will be held on Friday 27th December and starts at 7.30pm. Everyone is invited and admission is free of charge.

The concert will include various Christmas Classical pieces, some of which will be interpreted a cappella by the choir, others played by the Brass Ensemble and finally all musicians will together interpret further Christmas music. Soloists Marouska Attard and Albert Buttigieg will perform other pieces amongst which the mostly requested and acclaimed solo Christmas piece ‘O Holy Night’.

Having skipped this year’s edition of ‘Carols by Candlelight’, Schola Cantorum Jubilate still wanted to amuse its followers by holding a Christmas concert. Moreover, the venue was chosen also on purpose since the choir wants to show its gratitude for the award it received from San Lawrenz Parish. During this festive period the village of San Lawrenz is very active with liturgical and social celebrations amongst which the Christmas Pageant which will be held on 22nd December 2013.

Schola Cantorum Jubilate is a private youth choir which performs every Sunday at the Basilica of Xagħra, from where the majority of choristers hail. Throughout the year, the choir is active with various performances and concerts and this year, the choir obtained two awards. In August, San Lawrenz Parish Church acknowledged Schola Cantorum Jubilate with the Golden Palm Award for its continuous commitment in the local musical sector. Moreover, in November, the choir competed in the 5th Malta International Choirs’ Festival organised by Interkultur, Ministry for Tourism and MTA. Many international and professional choirs were participating and SCJ obtained the Silver Medal Highest Award in the category Sacred Music for mixed choirs. It was the only Maltese choir participating.

The BrassTubes is a group composed of musicians who are specialists in brass instruments. This newly-formed ensemble hails from Victoria and its objectives are to provide a wide selection of musical styles ranging from the classical repertoire to the all-time popular jazz standards. In every concert they have performed, the BrassTubes has received positive acclaim from audiences and critics alike, being particularly praised for their scintillating musicality, brilliant virtuosity and outstanding technical abilities.

The painting featured on all promotional material is an original creation of Denis Mompalao, another young talented Gozitan artist. The painting was commissioned on purpose for ‘Carolling Christmas’ and in fact it will be in the church on the concert day for viewing. However, anyone interested in purchasing it can contact the organisers. Offers can be made and the most advantageous one will be considered.

Surely it is going to be another concert which Christmas and music lovers cannot miss during the season holidays. More details about the concert on sanlawrenz.org or scjchoir.com.
