William Chetcuti narrowly missed out on top spot at the Malta International Double Trap Grand Prix last weekend after losing out to Italian Alessandro Chianese in a tight shoot-off.

The competition, hosted by the Malta Shooting Sport Federation (MSSF) at its Bidnija ranges, saw Chetcuti, the country’s most decorated shooter, and Chianese qualify for the gold medal match.

Chetcuti led the field at the end of the qualifying round with a total of 139 points, 10 more than Chianese. In the semi-finals, Chetcuti hit a 30-straight to Chianese’s 28 before the two shooters achieved a perfect score of 30 in the decisive match.

The ensuing shoot-off was another close affair but it was Chianese who emerged on top after targeting 19 clays to Chetcuti’s 18.

Matthew Grech finished third after overcoming Nathan Lee Xuereb in a shoot-off for bronze.

Italian duo Andrea Vescovi and Francesco D’Aniello were fifth and sixth respectively.

The International Trap Grand Prix, being held this weekend, will feature the participation of Maltese, Italian and British shooters.

In a statement, the MSSF thanked main sponsors Tumas Group, the Kunsill Malti għall-iSport, the Maltese Olympic Committee and Blueline for their support.
