English football lovers and in particular Manchester United fans are set for a great treat next month as the English Premier League giants Legends team will be travelling to Malta to play a friendly against Malta champions Valletta.

The exhibition match is being organized on the initiative of the Valletta 2018 Foundation in collaboration with the Manchester United Supporters Club Malta and will be held on September 9 at the Centenary Stadium.

Details of the event were given by Jason Micallef, chairperson of the Valletta 2018 Foundation, during a news conference at the Valletta FC premises.

Micallef said that the event will be a great attraction for all football fans in Malta and revealed that there was only one Maltese team who he felt should face the Manchester United selection.

“I am really happy today to be able to announce the organisation of this exhibition match between Valletta and the Manchester United Legends,” Micallef said.

“When the Manchester United Supporters Club Malta approached us with the idea we immediately started working on the proposal. Valletta holds special significance to the supporters club as they were based in the capital city for a few years.

“For me personally, it was an easy decision to approach Valletta FC to offer opposition to the Manchester United selection and their committee immediately accepted our invitation. We are looking forward to what promises to be a special day of football.”

Micallef said that the Manchester United Legends team will be arriving in Malta on September 7 and will be lodging in Valletta where they will be taking part in several activities.

All proceeds from the match will be going to the Ursuline Creche in Gwardamangia.

So far, 14 players have confirmed that they will be forming part of the Manchester United Legends team who will be coached by Jimmy Greenhoff, who netted the Red Devils’ winner in the 1977 FA Cup final against Liverpool.

Among the players in action next month will be three members of the treble-winning Manchester United side in 1999, namely goalkeeper Raimond Van Der Gouw, and defenders Ronny Johnsen and Wes Brown. Veteran Sammy McIlroy will also be part of the squad.

Valletta, on the other hand will not be able to field their best side as the match will clash with Malta’s opening UEFA Nations League match against Faroes Islands.

“We are very proud to be playing in such a prestigious match,” club president Victor Sciriha said.

“Our team will be without six or seven international players who will be on national team duty but we are planning to give a chance to a number of fringe players while a number of former players have also be invited to form part in our team.”
