The 2019 T20 Summer League, the annual Maltese cricket competition, got under way last weekend. HSBC Malta CC ended the weekend top of the table after a fine display against Paddy Power.Betfair CC.

HSBC set their opponents a target of 139/6 with captain Michael Goonetilleke top scoring with 37. In reply, HSBC managed to get Malta national team players Niraj Khanna and Michael Nazir out early. Malta and Paddy Power.Betfair captain Nowell Khosla scored 42 runs until he succumbed. HSBC bowled out their opposition for 96 runs.

HSBC Malta CC are joined at the top of the table (and behind on net run rate) by Kings Kerala CC. In the ‘Battle of the Kings’, Kings Kerala defeated Super Kings CC by 24 runs.

Bose Paul top scored for the former with a score of 47 as his team set a total of 147 runs. Super Kings could only muster 119 as they were bowled out. Basil George and Vishnu Shaju were the pick of the bowlers for Kings Kerala with 3 wickets each.

In the weekend’s opening fixture. Marsa CC came out on top against St John CC. Navdeep Singh Gill scored a half-century as Marsa set a total of 181. After taking a stunning catch in the first innings, St John’s captain Jurg Hirschi also notched 50. But it wasn’t to be for his side as Marsa hung on for victory by 18 runs. David Athwal was the pick of their bowlers with 3/37. 

Mater Dei CC claimed their first victory with a convincing display against Kerala Tuskers CC. Cornelius Khan top scored with 46 for Mater Dei CC as his side set a total of 172. Manuel Antony took 3 wickets for the Tuskers. A fine display in bowling helped Mater Dei to the win as Atif Sharazy helped himself to 3 wickets.

Next weekend will see the debut of Punjab XI CC into the league as Super Kings CC will be the team to have their rest weekend.
