Criminal charges are expected to be issued against disgraced former assistant police commissioner Mario Tonna after he was involved in a multiple car crash and allegedly drove off, Times of Malta has learnt.

Sources said the incident happened on Wednesday evening when Mr Tonna was driving through Sliema where he was allegedly involved in a crash involving three or four cars. He was eventually found by the police at his home and taken to a police station for a breathalyser test. The sources said he failed the test.

Mr Tonna made the headlines in Janaury when he was arrested following a report of domestic abuse filed by his partner.

The woman filed a report at the Sliema police station on December 28 after Mr Tonna physically assaulted her during an argument, headbutting her in the process. Mr Tonna tendered his resignation.

She also reported it was not the first time she had been physically attacked by the policeman.

She told the police that her partner had a serious drinking problem.

The report was eventually withdrawn and no criminal action is believed to have been taken.

Just before stepping down, Mr Tonna had been responsible for coordinating traffic in the country, as well as being in charge for the police garage and mechanical transport section.

This is not his first brush with the law. Back in 2011, Mr Tonna, then a police inspector, had been found guilty of various offences, including intimidating and harassing his superior, Superintendent Carmelo Bartolo.

Despite this record, Mr Tonna was first promoted to the role of superintendent in the summer of 2015 and then given the role of assistant commissioner last June.
