Striker Danilo Doncic is expected to finish his career in Malta after he put pen to paper on a two-year deal with Sliema Wanderers yesterday.

Doncic, formerly of Valletta, Bulgaria's Lokomotiv Sofia and Imortal Desportivo of Portugal, was the Blues' top-scorer last season with 32 Premier League goals, equalling the record he set in his last year with Valletta in season 1996-97.

His future with Sliema was unclear after the end of last season despite his scoring exploits as the Blues, disappointed by their team's failure to win any of the major domestic honours, took their time before drawing their plans for the coming campaign.

The lean Yugoslav also decided to bide his time before committing himself to any club. Finnish champions HJK Helsinki invited Doncic for talks last week but the deal failed to materialise.

Doncic was also seriously pondering an offer from Pietà Hotspurs but he yesterday opted to return to Sliema after the latter made him a tempting offer earlier this week.

Doncic will now re-unite with his former coach Edward Aquilina who was in charge of Valletta when they made a clean sweep of honours in season 1996-97.

Meanwhile, Sliema have just discovered that Czech Pavel Mraz cannot play for them in their first leg from the UEFA Cup qualifying round match against Polonia Warsaw at home because of a ban.

The former Valletta wing-back has been given a one-match suspension by UEFA after he was sent off in the Citizens' away Champions League 5-0 defeat to Finnish side FC Haka last year.

This week, Sliema announced that they had signed Mraz on a short-term deal in view of their participation in the Lowenbrau Cup and UEFA Cup competitions.

Now, Sliema are expected to review Mraz's future after the Lowenbrau Cup commitments next week.
