Emma and Luca were the most popular baby names this year, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said.

Figures tabled in Parliament show that 57 children were named Emma this year, while 54 baby boys were named Luca.

The second most common name for boys was Ben, with 42 occurrences in the past year, while 45 baby girls were named Ella.

For girls, Amy was the third most common, with 41 babies being given the name. Liam was third most popular name for baby boys, with 40 babies named Liam being born this year alone.

Emma and Luca were the most popular baby names for three consecutive years according to the table in Parliament. The name Ella was the second most popular name, for two years in a row.

In 2016, Jake was the second most popular name for boys, with the name Liam coming in third after 45 boys were given the name that year.

There were 39 babies named Leah in 2016, making it the third most popular name. The most popular baby names were repeated two years in row, with the names Emma, Ella and Leah coming in first, second and third respectively in 2016 and 2015.

Emma and Ella kept the two top spots in 2014, with 51 babies and 42 babies, respectively. That year, 37 girls were named Julia, making it the third most popular name of 2014.

The name Ella held the top spot for most popular name in 2013, when 42 babies were given that name. The name Luca was the most popular for boys that year, with 50 babies being given the name.

Forty-nine babies were given the name Jake in 2013, making it the second most popular name that year.

Between 2007 and 2009, the name Mariah climbed to the top of the list, with 44 and 40 girls being given the name, respectively.
