The former director of the museums department, Tancred Gouder, died yesterday. He was 66.

Dr Gouder was appointed director of museums in 1990. He was also the chairman of the antiquities board and a member of the national commission to Unesco since 1987.

He was an expert in the Punic period and had also published works about the Phoenician period.

Dr Gouder was married to Rosanne and had two children, Paula and Albert.
