Bowls pair Joseph Demanuele and David Farrugia stayed in the hunt for a podium finish after securing second place in the round robin groups yesterday to qualify for today's semi-finals at the Rocher Boules Club, Monte Carlo.
San Marino lived up to their favourites tag in this competition as their players, Matteo Albani and Giuseppe Frisoni, stayed unbeaten to top their respective groups.
In Group A, Demanuele beat Monaco's Edmond Plent 15-4 but lost to Albani 15-10.
In Group B, Farrugia started with a 15-1 defeat to Frisoni but then had the better of Monaco's Valerio Bruni with a clear 15-2 victory.
In today's semi-finals, Albani takes on Farrugia and Frisoni faces Demanuele.
Malta is sure of at least one medal in this event as the worst case scenario could be an all-Maltese play-off for a bronze medal if neither Farrugia nor Demanuele reach the final.
