Football education with a difference is the mantra of the newly-established Zazu Football School, spearheaded by former Malta Under-21 and Pietà Hotspurs FC coach Ray Farrugia.

The Zazu school, starting on the first day of next month, is open to young players aged between five and 15.

Farrugia, a household name in domestic football after a successful playing career with Floriana FC and Australian club Melita Eagles, is nowadays considered as one of the leading coaches on the islands.

Apart from his long spell with Naxxar Lions, Farrugia enjoyed a fair degree of success in his four years in charge of the Malta U-21 national team.

More recently, Farrugia was at the helm of the first team at Premier League Pietà Hotspurs, leading them to fifth-place finishes in successive Championship Pool campaigns.

"I'm really looking forward to the challenge of running my own football school," Farrugia told The Times.

"Football has always been the love of my life and I must say that my involvement in other projects related to youth football has given me great satisfaction in these last few years.

"I believe that my experience as a professional player and coach equips me well to understand the needs of young footballers.

"My vision for the Zazu Football School is not restricted to honing the technical and tactical skills of the young ones. I will also strive to help them become grown-ups with a good character and instil in them an ideal work ethic.

"Emphasis will also be laid on innovative training and guidance on the dietary requirements of football players," Farrugia added.

Training at the Zazu Football School will be held on two synthetic pitches at the University grounds.

The first 50 participants will benefit from a reduced admission fee of Lm35.40 for the period between February and June.

Applications may be obtained by calling on 2144 5153.
