Five people, including a minor, are being questioned over the attack on Liam Debono, the teenager who stands accused with the attempted murder of a policeman.
Police told Times of Malta police were speaking to a number of suspects but would only say that investigations are ongoing.
The five men allegedly attacked Liam Debono, 17, while he was at his Luqa industrial estate workplace after 2pm. A whip was allegedly used during the attack.
Mr Debono is believed to have sustained injuries to his face and eyes and lost consciousness during the beating. He was later taken to the police station to file a report.
The police confirmed a report had been filed at 2.15pm by a 17-year-old who was suffering from slight injuries, but the details were sparse.
Police are inspecting CCTV cameras in the vicinity.
According to TVM, the attack was not related to the infamous police incident but was sparked following an argument over a woman.
Mr Debono uploaded a picture on Facebook showing his injuries with the caption: "5 vs 1. Haha, that's a good one."
He works as a sprayer in a garage close to the place where May’s hit-and-run incident had taken place. He is currently out on bail.
