Professor Edwin Busuttil, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has passed away, aged 86.

Prof Busuttil was Speaker during the politically turbulent 1952-53 but is best known by many for his lectures to law students at the University.

He was head of the Department of Public Law and Criminal Law as well as Dean of the Faculty of Law and Pro-Rector of the University of Malta.

In the political area he was Deputy Leader of the Constitutional Party.

He was also a member of the University Senate, the University Council and the Medical Council besides presiding as Chairman of the Broadcasting Authority, Chairman of the Disciplinary Board of the Public Service Commission and Electoral Commissioner.

Professor Busuttil was a member of the European Commission of Human Rights and Vice-President of the Centro Internazionale di Ricerche, Studi Sociologici, Penali e Penitenziari of Messina, Italy.

He authored various legal publications and articles.

Professor Busuttil is survived by his wife Emma and sons Clarence, Graham and Trafford. The funeral will be held tomorrow at St.Julians Parish Church at 2 p.m..
