Stefan Giglio gave one of his best performances in a Malta shirt on Wednesday but that may not have happened had he accepted a proposal to change citizenship.

Sources in Bulgaria told The Times that Giglio, 24, had been asked by officials and agents to apply for Bulgarian citizenship after he finished his loan stint with Lokomotiv Sofia in 2003.

"I don't remember the exact details but at one time someone suggested that I should change citizenship to remain with CSKA," Giglio said. "However, it was a very brief discussion as I instantly dispelled the idea."

Giglio is still held in high esteem in Sofia and a section of the home crowd, probably fans of CSKA, cheered him on when his name was announced at the Vassil Levski Stadium.

Bulgarian critics are convinced that the Malta midfielder, MFA Player of the Year last season, still has a lot to contribute to their football.

Giglio, however, will only consider a return if CSKA Sofia come calling.

"At the moment, I'm not interested in signing for any Bulgarian club other than CSKA Sofia," he said.

Over the last few days, newspapers have reported that CSKA are mulling over a fresh bid for Giglio. His performance on Wednesday certainly helped to strengthen his good reputation in Bulgaria.
