Joe Grech is the 2005/06 Malta billiards champion after a clear 5-0 victory during last week's final against Brian Cardona, played in front of a sizeable crowd at the St Joseph Band Club in Hamrun.

Cardona had no chance as Grech won all sessions in convincing style - 150-5, 150-13, 150-46, 150-2 and 150-61. Frans Bugeja was referee.

On the same occasion, Malta Billiards and Snooker Association president David Farrugia Sacco and Paul Galea, the secretary, distributed trophies and certificates to all winners this season.

Thurston Grixti was the U-18 snooker champion, Ray Caruana the Division Two winner and Manolito Grech was the top player in the Division One championship.

Grech was rewarded for his national title in billiards.

Besides occupying the no.1 spot in the official snooker ranking list and potting the highest break of the season, a 137, Alex Borg was the Premier Division champion.

A few weeks ago, Borg, of Melita Band Club, retained his European Championship title and was awarded a wild card by World Snooker Association to play in the professional Main Tour in 2006/07.

David Cortis was singled out for the best sporting act and Steve Copeland was named the most outstanding player.
