A delegation of Maltese academics and teachers recently participated in various sessions of an international conference on early school leaving at Maltepe University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Prof. Carmel Borg and Prof. Carmel Cefai presented keynote speeches on early school leaving and social and emotional learning respectively, while Prof. Paul Bartolo and Prof. Carmel Cefai organised workshops on empathy and resilience.

Two Maltese teachers, Daniela Dimech and Maria Vella, and their trainer Denise Mizzi, presented their experiences on the strategies they are using in their classrooms to prevent early school leaving in middle schools.

The conference was organised by an Erasmus Plus project called EMPAQT on the prevention of early school leaving through teacher education. The Centre for Resilience and Socio-Emotional Health at the University of Malta is a partner in the project.
