Motorists were taken by surprise on Wednesday afternoon when they spotted a Toyota pick-up truck driving down the Coast Road with a long 'lance' sticking out its side.

"I was driving down from the Coast Road and I saw a pick-up in front of me with 2 metal rods popping out from the side without anything on them to warn other drivers. If a motorbike or a pedestrian passed by who knows what could have happened," a reader told Times of Malta.  

Times of Malta has provided road safety authorities with a copy of the original photo.
