The Malta 2 team taking part in the European Championship Masters tournament defied the odds yesterday when Tony Mifsud and Ivan Rizzo kept hold of their nerves to reach the final after a 7-4 victory over Belgium duo Rene Hemelsoet and Erwin Goethals in the semi-finals.

Mifsud and Rizzo kept home interest in the championships alive following the elimination of all Maltese teams and players in other events, hosted by the Malta Billiards and Snooker Association at the Dolmen Hotel, Qawra.

In the previous round, Malta 2 saw off Finland 7-5 in another tight match which stretched until the late hours of the evening session.

Belgium trailed 2-6 yesterday but pulled two frames back to set up a tense finale only for Malta 1 to fend off their bold challenge in convincing style.

In today's final, starting at 10 a.m., Mifsud and Rizzo play against Wales who thrashed Ireland 7-1 in the other semi-final.
