A US-based fireworks company dating back five generations won first place in the pyro-musical section of the 2018 Malta International Fireworks Festival on Tuesday.

Ohio-based Rozzi Fireworks beat home favourites St Mary's Fireworks Factory from Għaxaq to the prize, with Phoenix Fireworks from the UK coming in third place.

The yearly festival came to a close at the Grand Harbour on Tuesday, following two previous nights of events in Gozo and Marsaxlokk.

The event in Valletta kicked off with a concert together with a brass band and talented singers, performing live on a floating stage, accompanied by traditional Maltese fireworks.

The latter were exhibited by Lourdes Fireworks Factory of San Ġwann, St Philip’s Fireworks Factory of Żebbuġ and St. Michael’s Fireworks Factory of Lija. All three factories exhibited spherical shells (blalen) and cylindrical shells (sfejjer).

The crowd was wowed by a breathtaking pyro-musical show exhibited by Pyroemotions. Singers including Glen Vella and Amber performed a medley of Maltese music, in memory of Tony ‘Bayzo’ Camilleri, together with well known tracks by various artists and the late Avicii.

The medley was specifically arranged by Elton Zarb. All this was accompanied by fireworks let off in the harbour, resulting in an unforgettable spectacle.
