Malta suffered a 1-0 defeat to Gibraltar in a friendly match at the Estadio Algarve in Portugal this evening.

The match was balanced with Malta enjoying more possession but Kyle Casciaro's 66th-minute goal proved enough for Gibraltar, who only became members of UEFA last year, to secure their maiden victory.

Casciaro's winner, a low drive from close in after Gibraltar had profited from a miscued clearance by Ryan Camilleri, was a severe blow for Malta, moreso as it came only five minutes after Roderick Briffa's dipping shot from the distance came off the crossbar.

Malta failed to create clearcut scoring chances after falling behind with coach Pietro Ghedin making several substitutions in the second half.

Hibs striker Jean Paul Farrugia made his debut for Malta after replacing Andre Schembri in the second half.
