The 2010 powerboats season got underway with the opening race of the 2010 calendar in Ukraine last month.

However, the organisation hit a snag after the Yalta Grand Prix of the Sea when the official promoters pulled out abruptly and without ample notice to the teams, deciding not to continue with their financial backing and putting the rest of the championship in doubt.

The race in Ukraine was a success from various aspects, also thanks to the direct investment of the country.

Now, a new structure has been formed with the sole aim of concluding this year's championships, both in SuperSport and Evolution classes.

Informed sources told The Times yesterday that a group of local and foreign investors, based in Malta, will eventually organise this year's races with the next grand prix in store to be held in Maltese waters over the weekend of June 11-13.

There is also a possibility that the new organisation will decide to hold a second Grand Prix in Malta. This would be held in September.

Malta has been backing the powerboats championship for the last six years now with pilot Aaron Ciantar among the main protagonists, winning the Supersport championship twice in a short but glittering career.

Also, the locally-based boat-manufacturing firm, Chaudron, has been supplying various teams with their slick racers produced at the factory in Fgura.

This year, Ciantar is competing in the more powerful Evolution Class on board the Ukrainian Spirit, another Chaudron in the powerboats circuit.
