Malta’s first meme exhibition is celebrating internet culture and the office opening of alternative music publication Underground Sound.

This free exhibition will showcase online subcultures and their significance in our daily life.

Memes are loosely defined as humorous images, videos or text that are copied and spread rapidly by internet users, often with variations. They are comedic expressions of public feelings on many topics such as politics, international events and public figures, but also tackle love, sex and daily life.

In the words of the curator, Ian Hinksman: “The exhibition will raise many questions and few answers like, ‘How can memes survive without the internet?’”

What are often serious subjects are approached with a purely comedic perspective through memes.

“In this mad world, often humour is the best way to deal with the scandals and uproars of our time,” says Hinksman.

The event will double up as a recruitment drive for those wanting to join the Underground Sound team.

The exhibition is opening today and runs until Sunday at the back of Caine Tattoos at the end of Valley Road, Msida. For more information, visit #uglife or www.undergroundsound.eu.
