A close study of the Footballer of the Year history since the award was launched by the Malta FA way back in 1954.

Andrew Cohen's crowning as Malta's Footballer of the Year for 2004-05 was the 50th in the series.

Here are some interesting facts about this biggest individual honour which could be bestowed on a Maltese player.

Hibernians are the club with the biggest number of victories in the award. The Paolites lead the way with 12 successes.

Floriana are one of the undisputed 'kings' of Maltese football and in the past they have led the way in this award.

It is, however, 27 years since a Floriana player last won the Footballer of the Year title - in 1977-78 when John Holland won the honour. This reflects quite clearly the drop in fortunes of this club.

The full list is:

Hibernians - 12
Valletta - 11
Sliema Wanderers - 11
Floriana - 8
Hamrun Spartans - 4
Rabat Ajax - 3
Zurrieq - 1

The only time that the award was not given was in 1964-65 when the Malta FA decided that the required standard was not reached.

That year Frans 'Lula' Bonnici went through a great season with Birkirkara in the Second Division.

There was a huge outcry from the public for him to be crowned best player but the association, quite controversially, decided that the award could only be won by someone from the top division.

Eight players have won the award on two different occasions. It is therefore the ambition of every player to become the first to win it three times.

Noel Turner and Gilbert Agius are the only two from the eight still in with a chance of achieving this extraordinary feat. Valletta's Agius, in fact, was very close this year when he finished second to Cohen.

Valletta have three players who have won the award twice. Hibs, Floriana, Rabat, Hamrun and Sliema have one player.

It is interesting to note that no player has won the award with different teams. This shows quite clearly that loyalty does pay in football.

The two-time winners were:

Joe Cilia (Valletta - 1958 and 1964); Eddie Theobald (Hibs - 1967 and 1971); John Holland (Floriana - 1976 and 1978); Carmel Busuttil (Rabat - 1983 and 1986); Ray Vella (Hamrun - 1987 and 1991); Nicholas Saliba (Valletta - 1992 and 1999); Noel Turner (Sliema - 1996 and 2003); and Gilbert Agius (Valletta - 1997 and 2001).

Oldest and youngest

The oldest player to win the award was Tony Nicholl at 40 years.

In 1955-56, Nicholl was celebrating his 25th season in football. He was by that time well past his prime but the Malta FA still decided to honour him with the award.

While acknowledging that he fully deserved to be honoured for his tremendous contribution to the local game, it was considered by many to be a symbolic gesture by the association to one of Malta's greatest players ever.

The youngest player to receive the award was Carmel Busuttil. He won the first of his two awards in 1982 when he was just 18. Busuttil was born on February 28, 1964.

Only three goalkeepers have won the award. These are: Alfred Debono - Valletta (1972-73); Mario Muscat (Hibernians) 1997-98; and Ernest Barry - (Sliema Wanderers - 1999-2000).

The biggest omissions here were those of Freddie Mizzi, who finished runner-up eight times, and David Cluett who time and again was passed over by the judges.

There were a number of players who deserved to win the Footballer of the Year award but failed for one reason or another.

Of these, I choose Floriana's Pullu Demanuele (Il-Koku) as the biggest omission in the history of the award. In 1962-63, he was hot favourite but he found Edwin Schembri, of Valletta, at his best to pip him at the post.

Only one player in the history of the award came from Gozo. This was Eddie Vella in 1974-75.

Vella, who hails from Nadur, had a long and successful career with Valletta and Malta.

Player of the Year and top scorer double

These players have won the Footballer of the Year and top scorer awards in the same season.

1965-66 Ronnie Cocks - Sliema
(shared top scorer with John Bonnett)

1969-70 Joe Cini - Sliema
(shared top scorer with Ronnie Cocks)

1976-77 Raymond Xuereb - Floriana FC

1981-82 Ernest Spiteri Gonzi - Hibernians FC

1983-84 Charles Muscat - Zurrieq FC
(shared top scorer with Georgi Ivanov)

1984-85 Leonard Farrugia - Valletta

2004-05 Andrew Cohen - Hibernians

Outright Winners

As can be seen from this information, Ernest Spiteri Gonzi, Leonard Farrugia and Andrew Cohen have the added distinction of having won the top-scorer award outright.

Clean Sweep

On his part, Spiteri Gonzi is the only player to win the Player of the Year Award, the top scorer, the league championship and the FA Trophy in the same season.
