Travel review website TripAdvisor has released its 2015 list of landmarks with the world’s top 10 dominated by Angkor Wat in Siam Reap, Cambodia.
Second place went to Macchu in Peru and the Tai Mahal in India in the chart celebrating iconic human buildings.
Sadly, none of Malta’s highlights appear in the worldwide list, but as the website breaks down its award winners by region, the country gets a list of its own.
Just behind the cathedral is the 19th-century Fort Rinella in Kalkara with historical Valletta palazzo and ‘living museum’ Casa Rocca Piccola in third.
The TripAdvisor global top 10 was dominated by Angkor Wat in Siam Reap, Cambodia
Mosta’s rotunda was fourth, the Mnjadra Temples in Qrendi came fifth, while the air raid shelter in Mellieħa was the sixth-most popular landmark on the Maltese Islands, based on feedback from website reviewers.
Gozo landmarks were also recognised with Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu basilica in Għarb taking seventh place, then it was back to Valletta for the church of St Paul’s Shipwreck in eighth. Victoria’s St George’s basilica was ninth and Mellieħa’s parish church filled out the top 10.
Although local sights were also missing from Europe’s top 10 landmarks, Barcelona’s basilica of the Sagrada Familia was ranked highest in that list, followed by St Peter’s basilica in Vatican City and Milan’s Duomo.
