The one wish of a young Albanian boy, who lost his eyesight and both his arms after a hand grenade exploded in his hand, is to see again and the Maltese non-governmental organisation SOS Albania is on a mission to make his dream come true.

Dorian Daci, 15, has just been to Malta with his brother Eltjon, 18, and mother Barboll for a series of tests at St Luke's Hospital.

The life of the Dacis changed overnight when, on a wintry afternoon in November 2001 while the brothers were tending the cattle in the woods in the village of Suc in Albania, Dorian found an unexploded hand grenade under a bush.

Proud of his discovery, Dorian rushed excitedly to show his new "toy" to his brother and they started playing with it, completely oblivious of the potential danger.

While Eltjon momentarily turned to look at the cattle, the hand grenade exploded just as Dorian was squatting over it to get a better look - both boys remember nothing after that.

Eltjon lost his left leg from his thigh down, completely lost his right eye and sees a blurred world through his left eye.

Dorian was badly brunt down to his waist, lost both his arms from above the elbow as well as his eyesight.

The two boys, who come from a very poor family, were discovered unconscious in the woods by neighbours and carried to the hospital. They were then transferred to Tirana.

Their future was doomed until SOS Albania teamed up with the International Committee of Red Cross in Tirana to give them new hope.

Two years ago Eltjon underwent a successful corneal transplant basis under the direction of ophthalmic surgeon Franco Mercieca at the St James Eye Clinic, in Sliema.

He was also fitted with a new leg by prosthesis specialist Edmea Mifsud at St Luke's Hospital and on Friday he was fitted with an electronic knee.

Sitting relaxed at the Upper Barrakka Gardens, in Valletta, Eltjon said he was now looking forward to starting school and working on the computer, supplied by SOS Albania.

Dorian's fate is not so bright and despite spending eight months in Germany his corneal transplant was rejected, temporarily shattering his dreams to see again.

Having undergone extensive plastic surgery for his severe burns, he is now hoping that a new medical breakthrough will restore his eyesight.

SOS Albania co-chairman Lilian Miceli-Farrugia said the operation, which involved a complicated procedure of extracting one of the boy's teeth and embedding it in his skin and in turn helping to develop a cornea, was extremely expensive.

"Dr Mercieca is making inquiries to see where the operation can be held - either England, the US or Italy. We need at least Lm10,000 for the boy's operation. We are hoping to make his dream come true and bring a smile to the boyís face," she said.

Whoever wishes to help can send a donation to SOS Albania, Dar l-Emigrant, Castille Place, Valletta or to the APS Bank account number 10546730023.
