Michael Mifsud's two-and-a-half year spell with Kaiserslautern made him the centre of media attention during the build-up for this evening's friendly in Freiburg.

Mifsud, 23, had made a name for himself at the Bundesliga club after a handful of lively first-team appearances but as opportunities of first-team football became less frequent, the nippy striker opted to return to home comfort in January.

Rejoining former club Sliema Wanderers, Mifsud was soon doing what he knows best, i.e. banging in the goals to help the Blues complete a league and cup double.

Five months on, Mifsud is back in Germany to play against the best players his former country of residence offers.

"It's a nice feeling to be back here after I left Kaiserslautern," Mifsud said.

"Obviously, this match against Germany is an excellent opportunity to refresh the memories of those who used to follow me here and that's what I am focused on mainly. I have to play well for the team and remind these people of what I can do on the pitch."

Mifsud forecasts an all-out attacking approach by Germany but he is not downhearted.

"It will be a torrid 90 minutes but I'm confident that we can cause them problems with swift and precise counter-attacks. I have a lot of respect for the players in the German team but I don't fear them."

After Sliema's extraordinary finish to the domestic campaign, Mifsud is looking forward to making his mark in his last appearance of the 2003-2004 season.

"Sliema players are not short on confidence after our success," he remarked. "My wish is to close the lid on the season with another good showing."

Although Mifsud has been one of the best players in the league, the general belief is that he will soon catch the eye of another foreign club if he maintains his current rich vein of form.

Mifsud does not dismiss a possible return to German football.

"A move to a foreign club is still a target and yes, if the chance comes to return to Germany, I would definitely consider it," he said.

A repeat today of his vintage display in Malta's 2-1 defeat to Finland would surely strengthen his chances of an immediate move overseas.

The Times has learnt that a Danish agent who has long been monitoring Mifsud's progress, has been promoting him among clubs in northern Europe.

In fact, officials of as yet two unnamed clubs will be at the Dreisam Stadium today to watch Mifsud play after they were approached by this Danish agent.
