Grammy nominated American jazz guitarist Mike Stern has been forced to pull out of the Malta Jazz Festival due to a serious injury, festival organisers have said.

Stern, who was scheduled to perform on Friday 22 July as part of the Mike Stern/Bill Evans band, will be replaced by Dean Brown on guitars. He has been forced to cancel all dates of his European tour due to the injury.

Brown is a well-known American session musician and composer in the jazz/fusion scene, whose music combines rock, latin, jazz, funk, and fusion. He has performed with the likes of The Brecker Brothers, Marcus Miller, David Sanborn, Billy Cobham and Billy Evans himself. The video above shows him jamming at the 2012 Berks Jazz Festival.

He has performed on over 200 recordings which include several Grammy nominations and four Grammy Award winners. He released his fifth solo album, Rolajafufu, last April.

The Malta Jazz Festival will run from the 21 to 23 July and will feature artists as renowned as Snarky Puppy, Omer Vital and Marcus Roberts.

Concerts happening on Thursday 21 July at Valletta's City Gate entrance and opposite the Law Courts are free of charge and will feature headliners such as the Harold Lopez-Nussa Trio. The Jazz Festival is also offering another five concerts free of charge as part of the Jazz on the Fringe.
