Labour Party councillors are urging the government to change the law regulating the Local Councils Association arguing it does not represent a fair proportion of Nationalist and Labour councillors.

After the March 11 local council elections, the number of MLP mayors increased to 37 against 30 for the Nationalist Party. The MLP now also has 44 councillors more than the PN.

"It is unacceptable that MLP councillors have only two representatives out of six on the association. It is unfair that the Nationalist Party enjoys a majority representation when the Labour Party has a majority of mayors and councillors nationwide," the MLP said.

"Almost two months after the March 11 election, the government is arrogantly and persistently refusing to address the undemocratic representation of councillors within the association," the Labour councillors section said, adding that the European Committee of Regions supported its stand.
