The Malta Tourism Authority will be granting English football club Sheffield United £350,000 (Sterling) by way of sponsorship, it was announced this afternoon.

The MTA disclosed the figure in agreement with the club in the wake of various reports raising questions about the sponsorship.

Labour tourism spokesman Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca was among those who asked the MTA to disclose the sponsorship amount earlier today.

The MTA said this was a year-long sponsorship deal and it was "a very far cry" from the "multi million pound" amounts occasionally being bandied about.

"The value of the media and advertising exposure for Malta in the UK may well run into millions, rendering this agreement, from Malta's point of view, a great deal," the MTA said.
