Opposition leader Joseph Muscat has had talks in Beijing with Vice-President Xi Jinping, the Labour Party said.
It said the meeting showed the respect which the Chinese authorities have for Malta and the PL.
Dr Muscat and Mr Xi had also met in Malta last year.
In their meeting today they discussed bilateral relations and investment opportunities as well as issues such as energy from alternative sources.
Dr Muscat said the PL viewed Malta as ideal for Chinese investment, and he hoped trade relations would improve as quickly as possible.
The Chinese Vice President said he saw opportunities for further collaboration. He also recalled that it was Prime Minister Dom Mintoff who had opened the road for relations between the two countries in the early 1970s.
Dr Muscat, accompanied by PL foreign affairs spokesman George Vella and international secretary Alex Sceberras Trigona, also met European Affairs Minister Wang Jiarui and Deputy Foreign Minister Fu Ying.
